Expert Group Meeting on Enhancing Economic and Social Benefits of International Migration in North and Central Asia

ESCAP organized the Expert Group Meeting on Enhancing Economic and Social Benefits of International Migration in North and Central Asia from 19 to 20 April 2017 in Moscow, Russian Federation.

The purpose of the Meeting was to develop policy options for migration management in North and Central Asia. In the meeting, four background studies were presented and discussed, namely on (1) The Economic Impact of Migration in the Russian Federation: taxation of migrant workers, (2) Impact of Remittance Outflows on the Economy of the Russian Federation, (3) Remittances in North and Central Asia: Enhancing Development Potential; and (4) The Effect of Migration Reform on Migrant Intentions. In the meeting, experts had the opportunity to discuss the findings of the background studies and jointly develop further policy recommendations for enhanced migration management in the subregion.

As part of preparation for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration to be adopted at the intergovernmental conference in 2018, the meeting also provided a forum for participants to express their views of the key migration issues, challenges and needs in the region.

The Expert Group Meeting was held as part of the project on “Enhancing Economic and Social Benefits of International Migration in North and Central Asia”, which is expected to contribute to improved migration management in North and Central Asia.
