Inter-regional Expert Group Meeting on Transport Connectivity between Asia and Europe
The Ministerial Conference on Transport at its third session held in Moscow in December 2016, recognizing the needs for coordination of efforts in enhancing Euro-Asian transport connectivity, has adopted the Regional Action Programme of Sustainable Transport Connectivity in Asia and the Pacific, phase I (2017-21), which included the objective to establish an inter-regional coordination committee on transport between Asia and Europe. The Committee would seek to reinforce and support existing and future initiatives by increasing the level of coordination among them and providing the required platform to deal with transport issues between Asia and Europe in a coordinated and efficient way.
Resolution 73/4 adopted by the 73rd Session of the ESCAP Commission reiterated the importance of the establishment of an inter-regional coordination committee on transport between Asia and Europe and requested the secretariat to seek cooperation from the UNECE and other interested international organizations and accelerate the ongoing work towards its establishment and full functioning.
Against that background, the UNESCAP secretariat is implementing a project to assist the launch of the inter-regional committee as an institutional bridge between the two regions, utilize the results from previous related activities and embody a collective effort to identify, understand and address specific issues to be dealt with for achieving greater transport connectivity between Asia and Europe.
Under this project, the secretariat is organizing the Inter-regional Expert Group Meeting on Transport Connectivity between Asia and Europe which will be held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok on 30 and 31 January 2019 to discuss the initiatives, views and actions related to the development of transport connectivity between Asia and Europe.
