On 24 January 2017, ESCAP East and North-East Asia (ENEA) Office held a preparatory meeting on using innovative data approaches for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The meeting was attended by officials from this Office and Statistics Korea, experts from ESCAP headquarters in Bangkok, as well as academics from Yonsei University. It served as a platform to discuss big data methodologies, such as using satellite images, telecommunications data, social media information, and administrative data to improve data capture and analysis for monitoring and implementing the SDGs. ESCAP ENEA Office and Statistics Korea will co-host a subregional workshop in June 2017 to further discuss on opportunities to utilize big data and other innovative data approaches for the SDGs with government partners around the subregion.
