Regional Meeting on Road Safety Facility Standards for the Asian Highway Network

30 Aug 2017 to 31 Aug 2017
Bangkok,

The Asian Highway “classification and design standards as stipulated” in annex II to the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Asian Highway Network (http://www.unescap.org/resources/intergovernmental-agreement-asian-highw...) provides the minimum standards and guidelines for the construction, improvement and maintenance of Asian Highway routes. However, it does not provide adequate guidance on road safety and road infrastructure safety facilities.

To address the above, the secretariat, with financial and technical support from the Korea Expressway Corporation of the Republic of Korea, has been conducting a study during 2015-2017 on the development of road infrastructure safety facility standards for the Asian Highway network.

As outputs of the study,
a) draft minimum design standards of road infrastructure safety facilities for the Asian Highway network which could serve as a draft Annex IV to the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Asian Highway Network (for adoption by the Asian Highway member countries); and
b) draft comprehensive design guidelines of road infrastructure safety facilities (which could serve as a recommended practice and reference document only) were developed by the ESCAP secretariat with the help of international consultants.

The Asian Highway member countries are encouraged to send their comments on the above documents by 15 July 2017.

Revised versions of the documents will be uploaded to this website by mid-August 2017.

The ESCAP secretariat will organize a Regional Meeting on road safety facility standards for the Asian Highway Network on 30 and 31 August 2017 in Bangkok. The Meeting will i) present revised versions of the documents drafted by the ESCAP secretariat with the help of international consultants and further review the contents of the documents, especially the draft Annex IV to the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Asian Highway Network.

The draft Annex IV is on the technical standards of road infrastructure safety facilities for the Asian Highway network (only the draft Annex IV), which would be further considered for adoption by the member countries in the Seventh Meeting for the Working Group on the Asian Highway Network. The Meeting is scheduled for mid-December 2017 in Incheon, Republic of Korea.
