Launch of the UN Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2018

Building on steady economic growth, how can Governments in Asia and the Pacific ensure that such performance is sustained over time, is inclusive and has minimal environmental implications? What is the near-term macroeconomic outlook in the region, and what are the major current and emerging challenges?

Facing financial risks and ongoing protectionist trade measures, how can Governments effectively utilize and increase domestic public financial resources and leverage private capital to strengthen long-term economic prospects and reduce poverty? How much additional finance can countries mobilize from reforms in tax administration and incentives, prudent sovereign borrowing from financial markets, and public-private partnerships?

These are some of the questions analysed in the Economic and Social Survey of Asia and the Pacific 2018, (Survey); the latest flagship publication of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCAP Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, and Mr. Hamza Malik, Director of the Macroeconomic Policy and Financing for Development, ESCAP, will launch the report at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Thailand on Monday 7 May 2018.

The Survey will also examine the challenges that rapid technological advancements are posing in terms of job polarization, and income and wealth inequalities, along with the impact China’s pursuit of innovative, inclusive and sustainable economic growth could have on region’s economies.

Every year, the Survey discusses regional economic progress, provides cutting-edge analysis and guides policy discussion on current and emerging economic and development issues to support sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth in the region. It is the longest running and only publication by an international organization that covers the entire region (53 Member States and 9 associate members).
